If you don't have the game, and haven't read a preview (I have a review forthcoming), there is some "controversial" gender orientation. I say controversial because it all depends on your feelings about homosexuals -- in video games. There is a character that is blatantly gay and there is defenitely no question that he is male and is in "love" with another character in your party. It doesn't stop there. His demeanor is one thing, but his attacks in combat... sheesh, there is not one ounce of masculinity about the character. It was hard to deal with when you are in battle !
Now, I'm not a hater or homophobic, I just don't agree with their choices. I certainly don't agree with glorification in video games either. This is my opinion and it doesn't reflect on the site or the staff.
From Software and Ubisoft are a taking a chance here, anyway you look at it. My question is: What do you think about it? Is there a place for same sex orientation in video games?
Stand by for a full review that talks about the rest of the game, which is pretty dang good. There are some shortcoming, yes, but having an RPG for the 360 puts it up a couple of notches right there.

It doesn't "bother" me --"to each his own"-- but it's kind of detracting from the rest of the game. It just doesn't fit. Now if this game was more of a social type, like, say, The Sims, it would fit right in. Or even if there was more than ONE gay person in the game, it would make more sense. It just seems like Makoto is in the game for no other reason than shock value or simple support for gays.

I wouldn't call Makoto "support for the gays". Most guys....errr...gays that I've seen talking about it actually don't appreciate their approach to Makoto as the stereotypical drama queen wonder queer.
WHATEVER the case, there are two things one could do in this situation: temporarily (or even permanently, which may be even better) switch to the Japanese voiceovers. Besides the small handful of really GAY things he says that can't be avoided, the Japanese voice acting isn't a tenth as flamboyant as the English one is. Or, you can simply wait three hours until Makoto is out of the party (or you can simply keep him out of the party altogether, which also works to a degree; at least you don't have to hear his attacks).
I would highly suggest doing so as Enchanted Arms is a very sweet game once the "Makoto factor" has been removed (though, I will say, even his flamboyant voice acting is some of the best in the game, just in acting ability alone). Many....or the four or five that regularly visit these forums.... might remember I was on the fence in buying this and ultimately selling the 360 and, well, Enchanted Arms is one of the major factors that played into me keeping the system. The day I decided to keep the system, I went out and bought the game and returned my rental copy (which still had three days left on it).
It's a very good game and WAY better than the moron mainstream game reviewers have been giving it. It's almost as if they played an entirely different game or only for a few hours, one would think (though that's not very uncommon when it comes to JRPG reviews these days).
Speaking of which- ROBBIE, you better do this game right in your review. If you don't, I'm gonna sick this guy on you: | |
