Dunno. Just never did. It was a great game but I wasn't into it at the time.

I didn't really get into NiGHTS either back when it came out. It was fun but it took a while to figure out what you were supposed to do, which made it a tough game to display in a retail store. It wasn't until I bought a Saturn (and that game) a few years ago that I was really able to enjoy it.

Any particulars on the new game? Is it still going to be 3d models with 2d environments? Or is it going to be just the name and story with all new gameplay?

To my understanding, it's going to play very much like the original (2D gameplay, 3D visuals) and it can be controlled with either the Wii remote or the nunchuck analog stick. The story is supposed to be a bit more prominent in this one (hopefully the voice acting won't suck) but otherwise, they seem to have made pleasing loyal fans their number one priority so there probably won't be much difference in the way it plays from the original.

Typically, I detest developers who don't constantly strive to improve their sequels regardless of how great their originals were. But having been 11 years since the least (and only) game in the series, more of the same may not be such a terrible thing in this case.

A lot of times, developers go overboard with trying to "improve" their sequels and end up screwing it up...same with movies, for the most part!

Overdoing sequel improvements is also a possibility but I couldn't say it happens nearly as much (or is as big of a problem) as not doing enough. I'd say that making improvements to games generally results in a better product because if you're screwing it up, then whatever you're doing to your sequel is not an improvement. You're just changing it for the worse, which is something else completely.

I just hate companies that sit back and churn out the same game year after year when a simple roster update and/or mode download would suffice. If they're going to make us pay another $60 for a new game, it better have $60 worth the blood, sweat, and tears included. The frequency of sequels is another thing I take issue with. I found games like Rachet & Clank and Prince of Persia to be very enjoyable but when they release sequels every single year, it pretty much cheapens the franchise. Release your masterpiece and let gamers reflect on it for a couple of years...or in NiGHTS's case, a decade. Putting out sequels back-to-back-to-back is a great way to destroy the memorability of your previous games. But it's also a great way to make a quick buck so who am I to argue?
