As for the Brasso method, the only hard part is you have to get JUST the right amount on there and let it get to a near-dry state before you wipe it off. If you wipe it off early, the data is unreadable. If you wipe it off late, it won't come off at all. If anything, grab some old CDRs you don't use anymore and scratch a few of them and try to repair it.

Basically, you put a dab of Brasso on the spot with the scratch, and with a lint-free cloth (like the kind for cleaning glasses or electronics) you gently wipe it out towards the edge to spread it out. Let it dry for probably about 5 minutes or so (like I said...practice) and clean it off gently. When it's done, you spray it with Armorall, and just clean it like you clean a CD with your shirt when you notice a smudge. I've yet to have a CD that couldn't be repaired with that method.
